Through the WE GO COOP project, the Community of Practice on Wetland Contracts in the Mediterranean has been formally recognized as a collaborative space aimed at strengthening wetland governance, fostering knowledge exchange, and promoting coordinated action across the Mediterranean region.
The Mediterranean Wetland Contract Community of Practice has been established in Marseille on November 5th, 2025, on the occasion of the final conference of the WE GO COOP project and the concurrent 1st Mediterranean Forum on Wetland Contracts, and is promoted, in alphabetical order, by: Anatoliki S.A. (Greece); Association Secrétariat MedWet (France); FAMP – Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (Spain); Public Institution Nature Park Vransko jezero (Croatia); PPNEA – Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania (Albania); RCDI – Development and Innovation Network (Portugal); and Roma Tre University Department of Architecture (Italy).
The Community of Practice brings together any entity (both public and private) and individual interested or involved in the implementation of Wetland Contracts in the Mediterranean region, to promote networking, exchange of good practices, and capitalization of the results and outputs of past EU-funded projects that tested this governance tool.
Membership in the Community of Practice is open and voluntary. It is formalized by acknowledging the Memorandum of Understanding that established the Community of Practice and by subsequently submitting the dedicated application form.
The Mediterranean Community of Practice on Wetland Contracts is established as an informal network, without legal personality and without financial obligations.
The main objectives of the Community of Practice are to:
- network actors and organizations directly involved in, or interested in, the development and application of Wetland Contracts, fostering dialogue, synergies, knowledge sharing and long-term collaboration;
- connect Wetland Contract experiences, sites and territories to exchange methodologies and practical solutions;
- foster the replicability and transferability of the Wetland Contract model to new contexts and sites;
- promote the Wetland Contract as a proactive instrument for biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, combating desertification, water resilience and broader sustainable development goals;
- relate the Wetland Contract instrument to the wider set of environmental governance tools.
By joining the Community of Practice, members become part of a dynamic Mediterranean network committed to advancing collaborative wetland governance, sharing knowledge and strengthening the impact of Wetland Contracts across the region.
